Frederick I.O. Ofwono is a Ugandan lawyer whose career spans legal practice, strategic advisory, forensic investigations, debt restructuring, governance and policy. His policy work includes AI governance, data governance, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and digital finance.
He is the Founder & Managing Partner of DebtFree Uganda, established to help individuals and families facing financial distress find a structured, practical and dignified path towards recovery.
Frederick brings together legal expertise, financial restructuring experience and direct experience working with people in financial difficulty. As a qualified debt adviser, he has been involved in restructuring the debts of more than 200 households across his career, working with creditors to develop sustainable repayment arrangements and helping clients regain financial stability.
His professional work in corporate and commercial law and forensic financial investigations also gave him experience dealing with complex financial, contractual, governance and institutional issues, including investigations into significant financial irregularities.
A formation in law and finance
Frederick holds an LLB from Nelson Mandela University, a postgraduate diploma in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town, and an LLM also from UCT. He has also undertaken doctoral research in Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria, with a focus on comparative corporate rescue and restructuring.

At DebtFree Uganda, he applies this experience to give expression to a simple principle: financial distress is not just a financial problem. It is also a legal, practical and human one.
The aim is not simply to manage debt, but to help clients understand their position, make informed decisions, engage constructively with creditors and build a realistic path towards financial stability.
How we are structured — and why it matters
DebtFree Uganda is an independent debt-advisory and financial-recovery service. It is not a bank, lender, deposit-taking institution, debt collector or law firm. It does not issue credit, provide legal advice, guarantee creditor acceptance or receive or hold client repayment funds.
Clients stay informed and in control throughout. Where a client approves a repayment arrangement, repayments are processed through an independent payment service provider. We handle personal data in line with the Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019, and where a matter needs licensed legal, insolvency, tax, insurance or investment advice, we refer you to an appropriately qualified professional.
